Ideation, Base Model Making and Mock-Up Models Making
Inspired by our chair from the previous project, we had to design a lighting masterpiece that would compliment the design. We must start out with a base model(base design) that apply and best translate our formal organization and keywords. Then, we had to further develop 3-Dimensional design through series of transformation in response to a specific set of conditions without a loss of identity and design language.
Step 1: Position / Attachment
Our masterpiece should be lifted from the ground applying at least one of these conditions:
cantilevered, suspended, mounted, hanging, parasite, extruded
Step 2: Physical Alteration
Transformation consideration: addition, subtraction, multiplication
Keywords: twisted, rotated, folded, morph, split, envelop, expanded, bended
The design language should remain as per our base model.
Step 3: Design Variation
Adding in rhythm, repetition, multiply, gradation and treatment of the design plane from solid to skeletal to enchance its aesthetic value. We must also consider the best possible design that would enhance the lighting and the shadow it'll cast.

After some consideration, I decided to change my keywords.
Formal Organization:
- Linear
3 Keywords:
- Steel (Tangible)
- Shape (Tangible)
- Stability (Intangible)

Base Model

This was my first base model. I got inspiration from the steel bars of Wassily Chair and the wheel of bicycle. Then, I played around with the position. My idea for this model was to make the two circles swing. But at last, I found that it was quite hard to make them swing.

Base Model

After I got feedback from Ms.Sharmila and Ms.Annie, I got another idea for my base model. I tried to remain all my design language while doing this model. After I made every parts of it, I played around with the position again but honestly I didn't satisfied with it because it looked weird and I didn't really know how to describe it. I tried to arranged it until I got a bit satisfied but not that much. It took me a lot of time to cut the lines/spaces out of the circles.

Step 1

Proceed to step 1, I made my model in cantilevered form. Only one part of the sculpture got support.  Before that, I did some research on it and all the forms and sculptures really inspired me. I didn't change anything from base model but just added two small woods under the squarish kind of box.

Step 2

For step 2, I made a very plane changes which was quite wrong like what Ms.Sharmila commented. I made changes to the circles which was cutting more lines/spaces out, changed the form of the squarish kind of boxes and the surface of the curvy things. Ms. Sharmila told me that I should changed the form of the model not just the plane.

Step 3

For step 3, it almost same with my previous step which was quite wrong as well. I only produced more different size of the circles to be added. For the final outcome, I think that it looked more like an elephant seriously.

Step 1

After the first stage of transformations which were quite wrong, then I proceed back to my step 1 again. I tried other way to make it. I took out the previous squarish kind of boxes and added two small woods under the curvy things. It looked more simple now but sometimes simple is nice. From my point of view, I think this looked much better than my previous step 1 model.

Step 2

For step 2, I changed the form from step 1 like what Ms.Sharmila had told me. I got inspiration from the "Ricochet Tower" from a book "Siteless". I tried different ways to complete the model but at last i came out with this which I am satisfied with.

Step 3

For this step 3, I made changes to the circles. I tried different kind of cutting the circles as well.

Step 3

Instead of the circles like the precious models, I changed it into way more extract. I remained the curvy things and only changed the upper part of the model. I cut lines on the art card and played around with it. It was fun to play around and try new things. I made fews different pattern of it and at last I chose the best one. I also tried out with the lighting and I am so satisfied with it.

Reflection
I learned a lot throughout this few weeks. It had been a real tiring experience getting all these models done since there were times when every class we had to present an idea on butter paper and a transformation model. It was not easy trying to remain my design language when making all models. Those were the times I almost gave up but then I talked with my family. It was quite helpful for me to keep going. I appreciate all the feedback given in class or tutorial by Ms.Sharmila and Ms.Annie. All those feedback given every time helped me a lot and was very useful. Overall, it was a really good learning experience for me to have a better future.
