For week 5, we had our presentation where each group will present on the proposed activity to the whole class and our lecturer, Mr.Imran. Our group went on last as we were the 6th group. Based from what I’ve seen of the previous 5 groups’ presentation, they all have a detailed timeline of what the activities will be like which is missing from our group, such as itinerary of the activity day, the budget allocation and information needed from the selected orphanage as well. We didn’t manage to contact the orphanage at all to discuss what they need and that we just assume the general needs.  While the other teams were presenting, we were actually still upgrading the slides in regards of missing information with few of my group mates. Overall, I can just say that we didn't put as much time and efforts compared to the other groups regarding our presentation slide and the information. We still presented our plan, budget, transportation, and the activities that we are going to do at the orphanage and we received several feedback from Mr. Imran regarding the presentation.

After everyone did their presentation, we made a vote in class. The activity with the highest number of votes is to the animal shelter from group 3. However, this is not the final decision, Mr.Imran will need to discuss with the school and relevant departments for the final approval and inform us in the Whatsapp group.

As conclusion, I am really looking forward to the our CSI activity. I think it will be very fun and memorable. Also, the lesson I learnt from this experience was that as a team, we need to put in more time and effort to produce quality work.

For week 9, every group leaders and treasurer need to meet up to update our group's progress. As the treasurer for Group 6, I went to the meeting with our group leader, Nabihah. We update everyone on what we did and what we need.

During this week, I had also meet up twice with my group member to discuss on our part for the service. During our first group meeting, we discuss about what song we are going to use. In the meeting, we search through YouTube and other website. We also searched for a dance choreography that is quite easy and simple to follow as most of us can’t really dance and we also had to teach them to the children later on. In the end, based from several videos we found on the internet as reference, we decided to go for the quick yet fun dancing to teach the kids. We chose the song ‘Deck the Hall’ and try to come up with a simple choreography. The meeting went for about 2 hours.

While in the second meeting, we met up to practice on the Christmas dance. Since all the members in our group are from different semester, so our timetable schedules are affected. We had two sessions where some of us came and practice together in the morning, while the others practiced in the afternoon as we had class in the afternoon. The morning group session uploaded our practice video in our Whatsapp group chat, they just had to follow our moves. It was fun and funny at the same time since most of us are bad at dancing. We have made the steps simple and fun at the same time. We practiced for about 2 hours to get it right.

Besides, we also prepared the props that we going to use during our dancing time, to make it even more merrier! We prepared for all the kids. Our group finance for the props was only about RM100+.

26th of October, Saturday. It's finally the day for us to visit Rumah Charis and commence our community service activity. It really exciting me to meet the children. I think this was the second or third time I went to an orphanage house, can't really remember. We gathered in front of the house once we arrived. The headmaster of the house gave us a short briefing about the charity house and the children. He explained to us the rules of what to do and what not to do before we step inside. The children are mostly aged from 3 years old to 15 years old. It is a place for the children who come from issues family to have a peaceful place to learn and grow.

We then start our activity group by group. We are the second group to do our activity. During our dance performance, despite having everything planned out, we initially wanted the children to follow our lead, they are playful and hard to predicate, keep running around, sometimes they will just ignore you when you tried talking to them. It turns out to be a disaster for everyone. So, what we did was we just do whatever we feel like doing during that moment. In the end, our group are able to finish our task and everyone had a lot of fun. To be honest, it was really really hard in handling these kids because they were so hyper and excited at the same time. But somehow we managed to pull through it and put a smile on their faces.

The children there are actually encouraged to speak English, but still most of them keep speaking Mandarin. The children often approach me and speak to me, calling me "jiejie". The overall activity took about 6 hours. We sang and dance, play and do art & craft activities with the children. We even had lunch with them too before going back. It was a very fun experience. Although we felt tired, but at the end of the day, what we did was to make these children happy. I think the children were really having lots of fun in all our activities.

Reflection

Community Service Initiative

In conclusion, we have visited to Rumah Charis and we have prepared a series of activities, such as singing and dancing, drama and coloring activity. My group are responsible for the dancing activity. It was really hard in handling these kids because they were so hyper and excited at the same time. It turns out to be a disaster for everyone. I was grateful for the members in my group since they are all very dedicated to help each other. Although some of the members aren’t able to come on the day, but they helped us on buying the props and come up together with the choreography for the dance.

Through this Community Service project, I have a very strong feeling about it. Well, I can say, this is really a meaningful experience in my life. Community service is no longer something we need or have to do, but something we enjoy doing. When I see those children, there oozes a sense of sympathy towards them. Although they have bad experience with their past, but they never give up in their life, each and every one of them has their own way in managing their daily life. And, their life is full of happiness. There is no place for sadness, depression or desperation, simply because they clearly know that it doesn't help. All these are the important values that we should learn from them.

Besides, I can say that I have definitely learn how to be more patient and be more understanding. Be it working as a team in such a big group together or be it controlling and managing the kids both of these needs to have patience and understanding. We can’t raise our voice at them and need to communicate with them softly and firmly without showing any form of anger towards them as some of the kids have bad experience with their past, so if we act roughly towards them, it will trigger their mind. Another thing to mention is after seeing and looking at the kids' current conditions. Those children grew up without the companionship of their true family, and each of them make one another become their new family. They will remain staying in the orphanage until they are ready to continue their basic living in the society. I really get motivated and impressed by their every single action. Touching!

Visiting the Rumah Charis home is definitely a great experience. I learnt a lot from the children. I have realized how fortunate I am in this current state, living in such a comfortable environment, being able to have a proper education, food and shelter. I hope this participation can remind me to always be thankful for everything that I have. Able to help and teach, and to also show love and support to orphanage kids there was definitely a privileged. Seeing the smile on their faces really makes your day and makes you feel the joy of doing these little things. If I had an opportunity to do this sort of event or project in the future again, I would definitely want to volunteer and help out. It's time for me to stand out to do something to for the society. My life becomes motivated. For every single work or task, I will try my best to complete it.

Lastly, I would like to thanks our lecturer, Mr.Imran for guiding us and also thanks to my group members and finally thanks to everyone for making this event a success!
